It’s The End Of An Era, Again, For ‘Destiny 2’ Today – Forbes

Destiny 2 HeresyYes, it’s true that The Final Shape was indeed the end of an major era that spanned a decade, all the way back to Destiny 1 and straight through Destiny 2, but today we are at…another end of an era, this time the epilogue of The Final Shape and this entire saga, and the launch of a new Episode, Heresy. This is the last Episode, and then we will change to a double expansion/four major update model in “Frontiers” that will alter the seasonal model we’ve had since after Forsaken back in 2018.It’s pretty widely accepted that Episodic model from 2024-2025 has been…lacking. Despite a good amount of content the past two episodes (yes, there was a lot in the context of past seasons), the reason to play it was often lacking, and the story structure and narrative was subpar.Even still, there are hopes for today’s launch of Heresy, the last episode that this time focuses on the Hive, likely hiding away Hive gods Savathun and Xivu Arath in the shadows, and the ultimate, unstated but implied goal of the Episode is equipping us to leave our solar system, already promised in the events of Frontiers. Likely on board this country-sized ship, the Dreadnaught. The draw for Heresy this time is a new activity that implements “roguelike” elements with no regenerating health and collectible boons and upgrades. Also a path to “super” seasonal weapons, despite crafting only being relegated to a Vault of Glass reprise. There’s also an SMG that’s a circle.Destiny 2 FrontiersI do expect this Episode to be better than the last two, though whether that’s “good” or not is unclear. I’m also wondering about the length, as we have no promised release date for Frontiers except for some time this year, and the gap between Destiny 2 expansions has almost always extended to 1.5 years, so we’ll see.I am certainly okay with leaving the underwhelming Episodic era behind, and at the very least, excited to see what new locations we go to that are not existing planets or moons or asteroid fields in our current system. We’ve wanted this for a decade, and it’s starting. But also starting is a new era that will include less content than we’ve seen so far. How much less content remains to be seen, but there are two expansions that will be smaller than past ones, and effectively no seasons or episodes at all over the course of the year, just ritual activity modifications and loot dumps, from the sound of it.Why this is happening is no great mystery. Bungie has been almost cut in half the last few years between layoffs, voluntary departures and bits and pieces being carved out and given to Sony. And of course there is a significant team working on Marathon now, Bungie’s main priority for 2025, and no doubt 2026 as well (and if it does well, many years after that).Destiny players have been extremely vocal about the main impetus to keep playing being an actual Destiny 3 after all this time, but that does not seem to even be in development at this point, and at best, maybe something like that is five years away, if it will ever exist at all. What we know is that Frontiers is the plan for the foreseeable future, and I would in fact consider this Destiny’s true third age. I am concerned, but still hopeful.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy. One Community. Many Voices.
