Competitive 6v6 Is Coming Back To Overwatch 2 — For A Little While, Anyway – Forbes
Sigma, Hazard, Venture, Juno, Doomfist and Soldier: 76 in Overwatch 2. Blizzard has answered the prayers of those who can’t get enough of 6v6 in Overwatch 2. The company will run a competitive 6v6 season soon. This won’t last an entire Overwatch 2 season, however. Per game director Aaron Keller in the latest Director’s Take blog post, this will be a mini-season that starts when the midseason patch of Season 15 arrives, so likely sometime in March. The idea is for Blizzard to get a stronger sense of how much demand there is for 6v6.The initial 6v6 tests “took the form of 6v6 Role Queue, and 6v6 Min 1 Max 3. The Role Queue version accounted for nearly 10% of all play hours in the game for most of its event run. For reference, our Role Queued Quick Play mode accounts for roughly 35-40% of play hours (this was lower during the 6v6 tests). There’s definitely a demand for a mode with this team size, but it’s still uncertain how large that demand is, Keller wrote. ”It’s still a little early to say what 6v6’s place is in Overwatch with a decent amount of people playing it, I think that it’s probably here to stay in some form, but so far, we’re not ready to swap the core format of the game.”So it seems pretty clear: if you want 6v6 to stick around and for it to have a competitive option, you’ll probably want to play this mini-season of ranked as much as you can and encourage your buddies to do the same.In other competitive news, Clash maps will be removed from ranked play starting in Season 15 next month, though they’ll remain in Quick Play and other unranked modes. “Right now, Clash has a few problems, with some matches having a team steamroll and ending much faster than a typical Overwatch game,” Keller noted. “It can also be confusing as to which point is active for some players.” Blizzard will take the opportunity to “look at these maps and work to find ways to deliver the best Competitive experience for all of our players.”We’ll soon find out about the new “out of this world” weapon variant that you’ll be able to unlock with Competitive points (CP). A chrome variant might just be tempting enough to draw me into ranked. However, alongside that rollout, the Jade Weapons will no longer be available after this season. At least you’ll earn double CP during the last Drives event of the season to help you unlock more of those. On top of all of that, Blizzard is adjusting the rank system so that higher ranks include a larger percentage of the player base. This should also mean that more skilled players make it into the Champion rank. This will happen as part of the annual rank reset in Season 15. Blizzard’s also promising more news about new systems coming to Comp, which will be revealed in the coming weeks. On that note, Blizzard is promising to reveal some massive, “groundbreaking” PVP changes during a stream called Overwatch 2 Spotlight on February 12 at 1PM ET. This will include “a glance at new heroes, new maps and even more content coming this February and beyond.” For the game’s sake, here’s hoping the event lives up to the hype, especially considering that Overwatch 2 is dealing with a significant new competitor in Marvel Rivals.Follow my blog for more coverage of video games like Overwatch 2 and word games.
