‘Emilia Pérez’ director describes Spanish as “a language of developing countries and poor people” – AS USA
Academy AwardsThe crime musical ‘Emilia Pérez’ has exceeded all expectations by claiming 13 nominations for this year’s Oscars, the most of any film. The Spanish-language picture is based on the 2018 novel ‘Écoute’ that follows a Mexican cartel leader who embarks on a project to disappear and transition into a woman. The director, Jacques Audiard, has been nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards but he found himself in hot water in recent days with some bizarre comments, causing a huge backlash in Mexico. “Spanish is a language of modest countries, of developing countries, of the poor and migrants,” Audiard said in a recent interview. Given that the film is largely in Spanish, the timing of Audiard’s comments is strange. Many of the cast members are first-language Spanish speakers and the star of ‘Emilia Pérez’, Karla Sofia Gascón, could become the first Spaniard to win Best Actress at the Oscars. The musical has won rave reviews since its release in 2024 and has already picked up a number of major film awards. It was premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival last May and won the Jury Prize. Gascón also won the award for Best Actress. ‘Emilia Pérez’ has already won the European Film Award for Best Film and a further four wins at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. It has a leading 13 nominations for the 97th Academy Awards. Those 13 nods are in the following categories: Best picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
