Orlando Bloom Reacts to Keira Knightley’s ‘Shocking’ Pirates of the Caribbean Experience – CBR
After launching with The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise became a massive hit. After Keira Knightley opened up about her mixed feelings towards the films, her co-star, Orlando Bloom, responded with empathy.Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bloom shared his support for Knightley who struggled with the negative response to her performance in the films. “It was such a huge moment in time that is almost like… it feels almost like another lifetime now,” he said. “But it certainly was unique and, you know, I’m always grateful. But I definitely understand where Keira was coming from, and she does wonderful things… I have a lot of positive takeaways.”Disney has had many famous names in its films over the years and an iconic Renaissance film nearly had a beloved comedian in the movie. In November 2024, Knightley, who played Elizabeth Swann, admitted that while the franchise made her a household name, it also resulted in a public take down. “It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time. I was seen as s**t because of them, and yet, because they did so well, I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for,” she said. “They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of, and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head.”Knightley also recalled how the constant scrutiny and body shaming affected her at the time. “I was very clear on it being absolutely shocking,” she explained. “There was an amount of gaslighting to be told by a load of men that ‘you wanted this.’ It was rape speak. You know, ‘This is what you deserve.’ It was a very violent, misogynistic atmosphere. They very specifically meant I wanted to be stalked by men. Whether that was stalking because somebody was mentally ill, or because people were earning money from it — it felt the same to me. It was a brutal time to be a young woman in the public eye.”Disney is a powerhouse company whose strength in animation is matched by amazing live-action movies like Pirates of the Caribbean. While Knightley has no interest in revisiting Pirates of the Caribbean, Bloom, who starred in the movies as blacksmith Will Turner, is enthusiastic about Jerry Bruckheimer’s reboot. “I’ve heard he’s pretty excited about it,” he said about the legendary producer. “It’ll be interesting to see. Jerry always brings out the big guns, as it were – pardon the pun. Cannons, I should say.” The actor is also open to reprising his role, adding, “Listen, it was a wild and fun experience so, you know, never say never.””I have a lot of respect for that experience, and Jerry, and the whole thing. But who knows? I mean, it’s sort of one of those things I really haven’t thought about it, really,” Bloom continued to Entertainment Weekly. “I’m happy that I got to be a part of something that feels like it’s standing the test of time, which is cool.”All the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are streaming on Disney+.Source: Entertainment WeeklyWe want to hear from you!
