Huttle, 42, of Hobart.Police said he did have a gun, but it was not clear what led up to the fatal shooting.Huttle was pardoned by President Donald Trump just days ago for a misdemeanor related to the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot.In 2023, Huttle was sentenced to six months in custody after pleading guilty to entering a restricted building. He had traveled with his uncle to Washington to attend the Jan. 6, 2021, pro-Trump rally, and they both entered the Capitol. Huttle was inside for 16 minutes and recorded it on video.”He is not a true believer in any political cause,” defense attorney Andrew Hemmer said in a court filing. “He instead went to the rally because he thought it would be a historic moment and he had nothing better to do after getting out of jail” for a driving offense. His uncle, Dale Huttle, pleaded to more serious charges, and was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for assaulting law enforcement with a dangerous weapon. Huttle was seen with an upside-down flag pole, appearing to hit an officer. Both Huttles were pardoned by Trump just days ago.Matthew Huttle was released July 17, 2024, and was on supervised release after a six-month prison sentence.Dale Huttle was released Jan. 20, 2025 due to pardons.Family did not immediately respond to a request for comment.”For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer involved shooting. The officer that is involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol and is our policy in these situations. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle. I will release the officer’s name once I have approval from the State Police Detectives,” Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said in a statement. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
