Here’s why. (AP Photo/Michael Probst)APApple just got hit with a class action lawsuit.Filed last week in the U.S. District Court of Northern California, the claims within this lawsuit have troubled quite a number of people.According to CNET, the lawsuit accuses the technology behemoth of using per- and polyfluoroakyl substances (PFAS) — more widely known as “forever chemicals” — in three of its Apple Watch wristbands: the Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport band. The lawsuit cites a recent University of Notre Dame study, which observed these types of wristbands as having elevated levels of PFAS. As for why this is concerning, PFAS have been linked to potentially increasing the risk of certain serious diseases such as cancer. And just to add a level of irony, LiveMint.com points out these products are marketed as part of a “healthy” lifestyle. The lawsuit therefore accuses Apple of promoting these products — ones that are typically worn 11 or more hours a day, mind you — under the guise of health while knowing about these purported toxic chemical levels.“Wow, that’s very bad,” reads one X comment in light of this news. “Not enough natural stuff we have to deal with, now it’s induced through these products as well? Terrible!”“I guess I should stop wearing my Apple Watch for 23 hours a day,” writes another X user. “It’s a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in manufacturing,” states another.Apple in a statement to Tom’s Guide maintains that the bands are safe. The company has also previously confirmed it is working on phasing PFAS out of its products.“In addition to our own testing, we also work with independent laboratories to conduct rigorous testing and analysis of the material used in our products, including Apple Watch bands,” the statement reads. The lawsuit is looking for refunds for people who overpaid due to these reportedly misleading claims, and asks for the court to prohibit Apple from making false advertising statements or selling these products without proper disclosures.
