‘A Complete Unknown’ Sings (As Does Timothée Chalamet On SNL) After 8 Oscar Noms, ‘The Brutalist’ Continues To Surprise – Specialty Box Office – Deadline

Timothée Chalamet-starring Oscar contented A Complete Unknown from Searchlight Pictures is holding at no. 8 at 2,010 locations with a $3.1 million weekend. James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic is rolling with a $62.9 million cume in week five coming off eight Oscar nominations including for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Leading Actor. That would be Chalamet, who was on stage rocking three of his Dylan favorites last night as both host and musical guest of Saturday Night Live.
Brady Corbet’s sleeper juggernaut The Brutalist from A24 rounded out the top ten for a $2.87 million weekend in a big expansion to 1,118 screens. The much-nominated epic starring Adrien Brody, fresh off 10 Oscar nominations, stands at $9.33 million. It earned $566k from Imax in North America for a large format cume of $1.5 million. The extent of the success of this film is really something. The performances are strong the story interesting yet it’s about a Jewish Hungarian architect who flees to Philadelphia during World War II, and screenings push four hours including an intermission. A24 has successfully turned The Brutalist into a must-see event for many.

Noting Oscar-nominated documentary Soundtrack To A Coup D’Etatfrom Kino Lorber, back in theaters recently, saw $11.6k on 7 screens this weekend but now has a cume of $245k. The Johan Grimonprez real-life political thriller about jazz, espionage, and colonialism in Cold War-era Congo, with themes that still reverberate across today’s U.S. foreign policy, is now the highest-grossing doc in the race at amid a difficult market for the genre. It was originally released Nov. 1 but returned by popular demand earlier this month. Its top grosser is NYC’s Film Forum, where it has sold out more than 20 shows to date and continues to pack houses.

Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story from Zeitgeist Films, by Bruce David Klein, debuted to $19k at an exclusive opening engagement at the IFC Center in NYC.
Other new releases: Steven Soderbergh horror The Presence from Neon opened to $3.4 million on 1,750 screens.
Angel Studios’ Brave The Dark starring Jared Harris debuted at $2.57 million at 2,230 theaters.
Moviegoers Entertainment’s Sky Force is eyeing $431.5k at 370 locations. The Hindi film by Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Anil Kapur, starring Akshay Kumar, is inspired by true events surrounding one of the deadliest air strikes between India and Pakistan.
GKids release of Naoko Yamada’s animated The Colors Within opened to $378k on 570 screens. This is the director’s highest domestic opening and top grosser, surpassing the first runs of Liz And The Bluebird (2018) and A Silent Voice (2016). The coming-of-age film is at 94% with Rotten Tomatoes critics (32 review) and 97% with audiences (51 reviews).
Holdovers: In its fifth weekend of release, Focus Features’ heavyweight Nosferatu by Robert Eggers grossed $2+ million from 1,973 theaters (down by 572) for a cume to date of $93.2 million.
Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here from Sony Pictures Classics saw a nice $240k on just 17 screens, expanded from five last week. The film with Oscar-nominated Brazilian star Fernanda Torres has a cume of $434.3k.
A24’s Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman is looking at an $891.6k weekend on 777 screens for a cume of $27. million.
Oscar-nominated Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross, from Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios, grossed $340k in an expansion to 540 screens in week 7 for a cume of $1.5 million.
Mike Leight’s Hard Truths from Bleecker Street grossed $166k in its third weekend at 542 locations. The film starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste has a cume of $619.6k.
Roadside Attractions’ The Last Showgirl with Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis passed the $4 million mark with an estimated 3-day gross of $360.8k on 390 screens.
