‘Superman’ Takes Flight In New Trailer And It Looks . . . Weird – Forbes

Superman I’m trying to stay upbeat about James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. I want DC to bounce back. I want all the franchises to bounce back: Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, Game Of Thrones, Lord Of The Rings. They’re all floundering.I was mostly very positive about the first trailer—much more hopeful than I was when Gunn showed off the very bizarre first image of Superman.Much of this shorter TV spot is exactly the same as the first, only slimmed down. But at the very end we get a brief glimpse of Superman (David Corenswet) flying above the snow and ice (pictured above). While it’s awesome to see our hero in flight, it’s also . . . weird looking? Something’s off.Watch for yourself:Maybe it’s something about his eyes. Or his entire face. His face looks weirdly CGI here. The CGI is one of the things that worried me in the first trailer, and it worries me again here. Maybe it’s just unfinished and we’ll see a more polished, less funky version at release. I’m really not sure.In any case, I will continue to be skeptical but open-minded. I have enjoyed a lot of what Gunn has made in the past—especially the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie—but the weird CGI and the huge roster of superheroes and villains and monsters does have me worried that there will be too much plot, too many moving pieces, and possibly a little too much of Gunn’s brand of humor for this to be a satisfying reboot. I hope I’m wrong on all counts. We’ll know more when the film releases in theaters on July 11th. What do you think? Does that flying scene look weird to you? People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David.”SupermanI guess it’s good that this isn’t bad CGI, but I’m not sure whether or not that matters at the end of the day. If it looks weird, it looks weird. Maybe it will be such a tiny moment in the overall film that we won’t even really notice. One Community.
