Netflix’s Best New Show Arrives With Stellar Critic Scores – Forbes
The Night AgentOne of Netflix’s biggest shows, and certainly its best mainstream spy drama has returned for a much anticipated season 2. The Night Agent has racked up critic scores that have surged beyond season 1, indicating it may have learned a few things from its original go-round.Here are how The Night Agent seasons currently compare based on their critic and audience scores:Night AgentSo that’s a 15% jump with critics, but a 17% decline with audiences. However, we should not read all that much into that, given that there are only a couple dozen audience reviews in so far, and there are over a thousand for season 1. Looking at IMDB instead with has many more fan ratings in, and the scores of the episodes are close to identical between seasons, mostly 7.5 through 8.2/10, which in the context of how shows are rated on IMDB, is quite good. These scores may not be all-time greats, certainly, but anything that’s reasonably good has the potential to do quite well on Netflix if it’s broadly appealing enough. The Night Agent is a good, albeit perhaps not wildly original, spy drama that appeals to a wide range of ages, and season 1 surged to become the seventh most-watched English language series on the service. It’s too early to know if season 2 will match that or pass that, but I would expect The Night Agent to reign at #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list for a long time. There may be a brief blip of it leaving that spot when WWE Monday Night RAW airs on Monday, but for the foreseeable future that may now happen every week as a result of that decade-long Netflix deal. The Night Agent season 2I’ve only just started season 2 of The Night Agent myself, so I can’t quite say it’s definitely better than season 1 yet. The whole “this agent has gone AWOL” thing is sort of played out, a quasi-Bourne spin minus the memory loss, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be handled well. I’m certainly curious to see where this goes. I’m also pleased this is a show that A) has ten full episodes, which is becoming increasingly rare in the streaming age and B) is not broken in half, a practice Netflix seems to be finally moving away from.We will keep tracking The Night Agent’s scores and viewership as time goes on, but this is a strong start in at least one regard, and I’m sure this is going to do very well in the short and long term.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy. One Community.
