Per People, the couple filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power (LADWP) on Tuesday to recoup the damages they suffered in the aftermath of the L.A. wildfires. Janet Pratt, Spencer’s mother, is also listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit; according to an Instagram Story posted by his younger sister, Stephanie Pratt, the Palisades fire also destroyed their parents’ home within hours of Heidi and Spencer’s loss.Filed in California’s Superior Court in Los Angeles County, the suit alleges that the devastation that rocked the Palisades neighborhood was “an inescapable and unavoidable consequence” of the city’s and LADWP’s mismanagement of the area’s water supply. Per the Los Angeles Times, multiple fire hydrants in the Palisades area ran dry in the midst of the January 8 blaze (the day Pratt and Montag lost their home), leaving firefighters defenseless to oncoming flames. The filing points to this event, as well as the Palisades’ Santa Ynez Reservoir, which the suit claims has been “out of commission since February 2024.” The empty reservoir was one in a long list of “long-delayed” infrastructure projects that environmental experts believe could have saved at least a few homes from the fire, according to the Times. The city, on the other hand, has claimed that “tremendous demand” on the system — not delayed infrastructure improvements — was to blame.Nightmare came true Montag and Pratt are suing for an undisclosed amount, which is intended to cover the cost of repairs to their property, loss of wages and earning capacity, and emotional distress. Per People, the couple’s home was not insured, as they claimed their insurance company dropped them from their policy prior to the fires. As they adjust to a new reality, they have also been busy documenting the devastation on Snapchat and TikTok, as well as re-promoting Montag’s 2010 album, Superficial. Earlier this month, Pratt told People that he and his wife were only active on social media because they needed the income.“If we were rich, I wouldn’t be on an app, I’d be buying a new house and starting to order things. So, I don’t think we would’ve shared anything vulnerable,” Pratt said. “This is how we already made money before. That’s our way of life. Heidi and I have been Snapchatting every day probably for eight years, our whole life.”The Cut has reached out to the city of Los Angeles and LADWP for comment and will update this post if we hear back.By submitting your email, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Notice and to receive email correspondence from us.Things you buy through our links may earn Vox Media a commission
