Here’s when the cicadas will be back in 2025 – WKRC TV Cincinnati
Now 21 Wed 22 Thu 33by WKRCTOPICS:CINCINNATI (WKRC) – It won’t be as overwhelming as the summer of 2021, but cicadas are said to be returning in the United States this year.According to researchers at the University of Connecticut and reported by CBS News, the second-largest group of cicadas will emerge this spring. The group of cicadas, called Brood XIV, are known for their noisy mass emergence.Brood XIV cicadas typically appear in May and last through June, said the researchers. During that period, the cicadas mature, mate and lay eggs before dying off, with their offspring beginning the cycle again. The timing of their emergence is influenced by soil temperatures reaching 64 degrees, according to CBS News. Climate change also affects the timing of the insects’ arrival.Brood XIV cicadas have historically been found in north Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, southern Indiana and Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.Researchers did note that the cicada group was declining on Long Island and their distributions were shifting in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana. While there will be fewer cicadas this spring, more than a trillion of the insects could still emerge. Despite the large numbers, the cicadas won’t all be in the same place at the same time, the researchers said.
