Winter storm blasts Southeast with snow, dangerous ice as widespread impacts reach 25 states – Fox Weather
Thousands of flights were canceled and interstates were strewn with spun out cars across the South and Southeast Friday as the winter storm brought some of the heaviest snowfall totals some parts of the region haven’t seen in years. ATLANTA – A significant winter storm left a swath of snow and freezing rain marched across the South and East to end the week, snarling travel and canceling schools across parts of 25 states.

More than 1,200 flights were canceled into and out of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Friday, the nation’s busiest airport. In fact, nearly 80% of all flights through Atlanta were canceled or delayed – mainly due to snow and ice and extended ground stops, as downtown Atlanta has reported 2-6″ of snow amid a mix of freezing rain.More than half the flights at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International suffered either delays or cancellations, with at least 330 flights in Charlotte canceled.WINTER STORM LIVE TRACKER: SNOWFALL MAPS, CURRENT ALERTS, WEATHER WARNINGS, ICE FORECASTS, POWER OUTAGESGetting around by car in northern Georgia wasn’t much easier. Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry said there were a “significant amount” of spinouts on the roads on Friday as ice accretions up to 0.25 inches combined with measurable snow. Winter weather caused crashes on Interstates 75 and 285 in the Atlanta metro area. State plows were ordered to create driveable lanes that were to be retreated to prevent icing on roads, according to McMurry. The commissioner said 600 snow plows have been activated across the state.Slick driving conditions in Georgia which was pummeled by major winter storm. Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry said there were a “significant amount” of spinouts on the roads Friday morning.Despite these precautions, numerous state roads near Atlanta and parts north were closed due to patches of ice, according to the DOT’s website.Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency ahead of the snow event, and the Peach State appeared to be one of the hardest hit states in the region.Gov. Weather-related traffic accidents have been reported statewide, including on interstates 40, 30 and 555.Road conditions began to deteriorate Thursday evening. Some of the impressive superlatives from the storm:The storm is quickly sweeping off the mid-Atlantic coast Saturday morning, but not before sending a parting shot of wintry weather back toward the Northeast. The greatest snowfall accumulations will be confined to the higher elevations West Virginia where up to 8 inches of additional snow will fall. Lighter snows will extend into the Northeast, which will result in roughly around an inch along parts of the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor including Washington and Philadelphia, while New York City and Boston could see a dusting.
