A Winter Storm Warning has been in effect since 5 a.m. Friday and will continue until Saturday morning. Driving will be dangerous, with slick roads and potential black ice. Here is the latest:3:10 a.m. – According to FlightAware, 297 flights have been canceled for far on Saturday and 37 flights have been delayed.2:45 a.m. – More than 101,500 power outages have been reported across Georgia as an ice storm continues to wreak havoc on the state’s electrical grid. Crews from Georgia Power and Georgia EMCs are working to restore service, but progress has been hampered by freezing rain, icy roads, and falling trees.Georgia Power reported that they are working to restore power to 86,416 customers, while Georgia EMCs are addressing 15,094 outages. The numbers have fluctuated overnight as new trouble spots emerged as quickly as others were repaired.It seems as soon as crews restore power to one area, another trouble spot pops up. The situation will likely worsen throughout the day as winds intensify.In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Georgia Power acknowledged the challenges crews are facing due to icy conditions.”As our crews anticipated based on the forecast, additional freezing rain and falling trees have caused power outages as the sun has gone down. We understand how important power is, especially in this cold. Know that we are committed to working safely and as quickly as possible to restore your power,” the utility posted.A Georgia Power lineman reiterated the sentiment in a video shared on X. “Conditions overnight remain challenging with icy roads and winds, but as long as it is safe—we will be working.”With winds picking up, officials are urging residents to stay off the roads and report any downed power lines.2:20 a.m. – The FOX 5 Storm Team says the biggest threat for the early morning is black ice, slushy and treacherous road conditions. The wind will blow into Georgia as the morning progresses, causing tree limbs to fall and power to go out. GET THE LATEST FORECAST1:10 a.m. – So far, 213 flights have been canceled in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with 27 flights delayed, according to FlightAware.1 a.m. – Current power outages across the state:12:31 a.m. – Dunwoody Police report that most roadways are passable, but icy patches remain a significant hazard. They strongly advise against driving unless absolutely necessary. If travel is unavoidable, proceed with extreme caution.Several trees have fallen across the city, but Dunwoody Public Works Department has been diligently responding to these incidents throughout the night.A large tree has fallen, obstructing the majority of Womack Road at Oakhurst Walk. Public Works crews have arrived on the scene.The following side streets are completely blocked off by the fire department due to downed power lines:Georgia Power has been notified.A significant portion of the eastern part of the city is experiencing power outages. This includes the entire Tilly Mill area from PIB to Mt. Vernon, impacting all traffic signals. Remember to treat these intersections as a four-way stop until Georgia Power can restore the power in the area.12:30 a.m. – According to the city of South Fulton Police Department, a tree is blocking Jonesboro Road at Autumn bluff. Remember black ice can be difficult to spot and is often mistaken for wet roads.First responders are urging motorists to stay home on Saturday due to the potential for black ice. What is black ice? It’s a thin, layer of ice that is very difficult to see. It can form on roads, sidewalks and driveways in freezing conditions. Since it’s nearly invisible, it poses a huge risk to drivers and pedestrians.10:30 p.m. – Georgia Power outages have decreased to 77,028 while the Georgia EMCs have dropped to 22,645.As of 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 10, 2025, at least 90,000 customers across Georgia still had no power as a result of the winter storm. They advise all drivers to stay off the roadway.9:40 p.m. – Georgia Power reports 89,403 outages while the Georgia EMCs state outages have decreased to 25,613.8:58 p.m. – I-20 in Conyers has reopened. READ MORE7:34 p.m. – The Walton County Sheriff’s Office reports multiple trees are down in the county and “it’s about to get nasty.”7:24 p.m. – Wills Road between Wills Lane and Spur Lane is currently closed due to a large tree downed, according to the Alpharetta Public Safety Department. 7:21 p.m. – Interstate 20 is both directions is closed at Highway 138 due to a crash which brought down a power line, according to the Conyers Police Department.7:20 p.m. – Freemanville Road between School Drive and Providence Road is closed until further notice due to a power line that has caused a small fire, according to the Milton Police Department and Milton Fire Department.7:19 p.m. – Georgia Power reports 58,020 outages and the Georgia EMCs report 30,144 outages.7:15 p.m. – DeKalb County says staff has responded to 30 calls reporting ice. Cleared ice on the driveways and parking lot at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA) on N. Druid Hills Road and provided material to Clarkston, Decatur, Pine Lake, Lithonia and Dunwoody. There were 164 requests for assistance and three ambulances are operating with snow chains.6:40 p.m. – MARTA bus service will remain suspended this evening due to hazardous road conditions and forecasted freezing rain. Bus service will resume when road conditions allow.6:12 p.m. – The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office reports the 3700 block of Highway 92 is down to one lane due to a downed tree and power lines.6:11 p.m. – The Georgia Department of Public Safety reports it has received 1,030 total calls for service, responded to 225 cras, and assisted 156 motorists since midnight.5:49 p.m. – A team of Piedmont cardiologists, part of Heart Attack Ethiopia, has been delayed in Atlanta due to a winter storm, affecting their mission to perform lifesaving surgeries in Ethiopia. Georgia Power is reporting 33,054 while the Georgia EMCs are reporting 35,201. No word on when this area will be cleared.5:01 p.m. – The ground stop at Atlanta’s airport has been extended until 5:30 p.m. and the ground delay has been extended until 9:59 p.m. READ MORE5 p.m. – Power outages in Georgia have spiked in the last hour. Check it out here.3:55 p.m. – Freezing rain is settling into North Georgia now with icing now happening across a wide swath of the area. The FOX 5 Storm Team’s Alex Forbes says appears to be on track ti exceed our ice forecasts, particularly in Northeast Georgia. The temperatures are mostly below freezing, which means everything is sticking to the ground. The precipitation will wrap up shortly after dinnertime, and the winds will relax as the freezing rain continues, meaning any slush will quickly freeze. As soon as the sun comes up on Saturday, winds will quickly increase. The combination of frozen trees and power lines with the wind will create widespread power outages potentially as late as Saturday morning. Forbes expect most of the outages to occur on Saturday morning. 3:40 p.m. – Hall County will close all facilities due to potentially dangerous icy conditions on Saturday. This includes the county’s landfill, compactor sites, community centers, campgrounds, animal shelter and libraries.Currently, the county expects to reopen compactor sites on Sunday, but officials will monitor the weather for possible changes.”Ice is our major concern regarding the safety of our staff and citizens,” Hall County Administrator Zach Propes said. “The roads are becoming increasingly dangerous for travel, so we want to continue encouraging all citizens to remain at home and off the roads as conditions worsen and to report any hazardous issues that could be a danger to the community.”3:36 p.m. – The Georgia Aquarium will be open on Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. Any guest with tickets for Friday and Saturday can use their tickets any day in 2025 without needing to reschedule. While the aquarium was closed on Friday, the animals and staff had a snow day together.(Georgia Aquarium) 3:30 p.m. – A ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has resumed after it was lifted earlier Friday afternoon. The ground stop will be in effect until 4:30 p.m. and could be extended.A ground delay remains in effect until 9:59 p.m.3:27 p.m. – Gwinnett police wrote on X that they have responded to numerous road issues and vehicle accidents around the county and want drivers to stay off the roadways “unless absolutely necessary.”Officials have shut down Buford Drive near French Boulevard due to wires down on the road.3:22 p.m. – Georgia Power says it has seen minimal power interruptions so far from the storm, but believes that the number may increase with the accumulation of additional ice. Georgia Power crews from South Georgia have driven up to deploy where needed.The agency says drivers should watch out for Georgia Power crews working across the area. The zoo is also canceling Saturday’s “IllumiNights: A Lantern Festival” event.2:59 p.m. – SKYFOX Drone captured a view of Stone Mountain covered with snow. The park is closed on Friday due to the weather. 2:47 p.m. – Nearly 1,000 flights to and from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport have been canceled on Friday due to the winter storm. Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has canceled almost 450 flights nationwide and delayed more than 700.
