PS5 Tipped to Top Switch 2 Sales in the US This Year – Push Square

GuestGuestLogin | Sign UpPush SquareGuestLogin or Sign UpHere comes a new challengerPS5 is expected to outsell the Switch 2 in the United States this year, despite enthusiasm for Nintendo’s new machine reaching fever pitch.Circana analyst Mat Piscatella says he anticipates the unannounced appliance to sell 4.3 million units in USA this year, assuming it’s released in the first half of 2025. Nintendo still hasn’t officially announced the new device yet, despite a slew of leaks emerging over the past few weeks.Seeing as how an announcement appears to be coming soon (but who knows) – I have Nintendo’s next hardware device selling 4.3 million units in the US in 2025 (assuming 1H launch), accounting for approximately 1/3rd of all video game console hardware units sold in the year (excluding PC Portables).“I have Nintendo‘s next hardware device selling 4.3 million units in the US in 2025 (assuming it launches in the first half of the year), accounting for approximately one third of all video game console hardware units sold in the year, excluding PC portables,” he wrote.“I’m expecting to see hardware constraints for several months after a significant early demand surge. And units sold will, of course, be dependent upon manufacturing capabilities.“I still expect PS5 to rank first in overall hardware units sold in the US during the year.”Sony obviously has a big advantage in that its console is readily available to buy right now, whereas we don’t know when the Switch 2 will launch. We also don’t know how much it’ll cost or how many units Nintendo will be able to manufacture. The question everyone’s askingPS5 has been dominating hardware sales worldwide as the Switch has started to age and Xbox Series X|S has struggled to find any kind of worldwide audience at all. Recent estimates reported by Forbes suggested Sony’s console outsold Microsoft’s machine five-to-one worldwide in November, although that month did see the launch of the PS5 Pro.Sony’s system has been doing well, and is selling at roughly the same pace as the PS4 at a higher price point. But if the PS5 is to continue to maintain its momentum, the Japanese giant may need to find a way to bring the price down, as the PS4 was much cheaper at this point in its lifespan.[source bsky.app]About Sammy BarkerAs the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. PS5 is just bubble that survived thanks to PS4 compatibility. If Nintendo brings some interresting new features and descent game portfolio, it can easily flush PS5 down the drain. They launch Switch 2 with Mario Odyssey 2 and Mario Kart 9 and those projections gonna be wrong.@djlard “PS5 is just bubble that survived thanks to PS4 compatibility.”Really?I imagine the Switch 2 will sell at a gargantuan pace as long as Nintendo can meet demand, but that is probably why Nintendo have held off announcing the system as they get ready to have as many consoles ready for launch. Everyone I know is buying a system as soon as they are able to, and I can imagine some pretty special games at launch that will drive sales even further!@Bionic-Spencer The market that will determine the success of the Switch 2 will be the casual people that bought one for the family to play Mario Kart, and not the people you know. It’s very far from guaranteed that the Switch 2 will take off the same way as the previous Switch did. A refinement of an existing product is not quite as exciting to this mario Kart casual market as people think. The SNES sold less than the NES, the 3DS sold less than the DS. Let’s see if the Switch 2 can change things up then.Edit: Forgot Wii -> Wii U 😅Didn’t take long for someone to start spouting nonsense in the comments 🙄.Seriously though it all depends on software, looking at the PS5 with a new Monster Hunter, Ghost of Yotei and the mega anticipated GTA 6 then yeah you would assume it’s going to shift a lot of units this year. In terms of Switch 2 it depends on what the launch games are, and how much stock they have of the console.@ChrisDeku Also, I think the Switch had a massive pandemic boost which I don’t know if that will translate to the new one. We also have to see the pricing. I’m assuming 400USD minimum and that will hurt people from buying multiple especially for kids. The problem with Nintendo products, they are a bit too gimmicky (Looking at you Wii), another thing I don’t like is, they never put their games on sale (BOTW is still £44 on Amazon).@Oram77 the second one is the reason I stopped buying Nintendo hardware (and games). Last time was with 3ds.@get2sammyb Really. Except Final Fantasy 16, there is nothing worthy that cannot be played on PS4. PS5 exclusive game portfolio is tragic (thanks GaaS milking cow chasing), CD player gone, Web browser gone… It was way faster on release. Almost none developer uses its potential and PS5 Pro was even more horrible move, so developers rather avoid its new features (PSSR or what it is…)Nintendo Switch has only one limit and it is it’s horse power. If Switch 2 release with enough power to run PS4 games, than PS5 is doomed.@djlard “PS5 is doomed” how? You act like that both consoles have the exact same catalogue of games. The switch 2 is going to sell well regardless, but there is no way their sales will affect the PS5 is anyway (maybe in Japan)I’m fairly certain this man took the sales figures of the original Switch in its launch year and took a few hundred thousand off because Switch 2 is unlikely to launch as early in the year.Call me an old stock in the mud, but making broad, sweeping statements about a console that hasn’t even been officially revealed yet with no idea as to its software lineup doesn’t scream ‘analyst’ to me.@djlard Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, Returnal, Helldivers 2, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart… Are you serious??Oh, these aren’t ‘worthy’ to you, got it!@djlard Why does there need to be games that aren’t on PS4? What games does a GTX 4090 play that a 6 year old PC can’t play? Are modern PCs tragic?Nintendo Switch has only one limit and it is it’s horse power. If Switch 2 release with enough power to run PS4 games, than PS5 is doomed. The GameCube was more powerful than the PS2 btw. 160m vs 21m in sales.@Oram77 it was meant PS5 bigger sales than Switch 2 are doomed.@djlardYou are spouting a lot of personal thoughts and opinions posing them as facts more or less, when they are not. Your opinions are yours, you are free to express them but please separate that from trying to predict the doom of the ps5 as it makes absolutely no sense.@UltimateOtaku91 GTA6 is all PS5 needs to „win“ this race in 2025.@Dimey Good games, but are those reason to buy new console?@mac_da_man meant 2025 sales.@ChrisDeku Because of reason to buy new console. Here’s a bold prediction: The Xbox Series Something will be outsold by the PS5 and the Switch successor in terms of sales in 2025.See? That’s what I call unity, and there’s nothing more unifying between Nintendo and Sony than beating Microsoft’s ass.And I’m just playing Xbox fans. You know I love you.I’m not at all sure that the Switch 2 will have the same acceleration out the gate as the switch 1, nor reach the sales numbers overall of its predecessor.People who bought the switch did so as it gave functionality that they couldn’t really get elsewhere, but now they can. They own their Switch and lots of games will be cross gen.Just like with the Wii U, I think just releasing the same game franchises to gamers who are a little more casual on average and already have a similar system just won’t produce much, if any, growth.
Sure the hardcore will always want the new Zelda, Pokémon, Metroid, and Mario, they have that locked…and lots of casuals might want the new animal crossing and Mario Kart, but enough to spend hundreds on another system? I’m not sure. Certainly not at launch, and I doubt all of them in the long term either. As for this guys opinion; I didn’t really mention it as it’s self bloody evident given the different lengths of time each will have to sell.We will see though GTA VI will no doubt give consoles a massive sales boost@thefourfoldroot1 As soon as a new Pokemon game drops Switch 2 sales will go through the roof.@DennisReynolds After the last couple of Pokemon releases? some people have lost faith in gamefreaks because of those games.Of course the ps5 is going to outsell a new console that hasn’t even been announced or released yet. Right now a paper plate would outsell the switch 2 because it’s non existent yet. Hell even the Xbox series s | x is out selling the not released switch 2 at the moment and usually that cant out sell anything. You and these analysts are all wrong Xbox Series consoles will sell the most. It’s simple this prediction stuff.I find this hard to believe. Consoles usually sell best when they release (unless there are supply constraints) and the Switch is hugely popular – my bet would be it selling more than PS5 in 2025 even if it’s on sale for 3 months less.I’m no analyst though. We’ll see.New Sega console coming in 2025 will outsell all competitors, even bread. Yes, it will outsell bread. Anybody can post this rubbish.“But if the PS5 is to continue to maintain its momentum, the Japanese giant may need to find a way to bring the price down, as the PS4 was much cheaper at this point in its lifespan“Umm.. price has gone up from day one release, then PS5 Pro releases with higher price(obviously) and yet the PS5 still continues to shift tons of units. So… um… no. No cheaper console likely any time soon. People vote with their wallet and have decided, Sony, please take my hard earned money. Sony says thanks in return.nintendo was never a threat to playstation or xbox. not in software, damn sure not in online or hardware.only owning a nintendo handheld/console is just shackling the hell out of yourself, almost everyone that has a switch has a ps or xbox to go with it@Oram77 A bunch of 30 year old neckbeards moaning on Reddit and Twitter don’t even contribute 10% of the sales they’re a very small minority. Everyone “hated” Scarlet and Violet but guess what they sold an insane amount of copies because shocker kids don’t care about framerates and bugs they just want to catch PM and battle with them.GTA 6 will even boost xbox and will be the only talking point for a while. I see nintendo trying to avoid this timeframe for a console launch.Bunch of hot air as no one actually knows anything yet. That’s a laugh lol@djlard Haha what a load of *****, cheered me up 😄@djlard A take so hot that it spontaneously melted the frost on my windows. If you think the PS5’s library is simply shinier versions of the PS4’s, then boy oh boy are you gonna be disappointed with Switch 2.Still not sure why we live in this bubble of caring what something sells as if it’s a measure to the excitement or fun we can have with a product. I drive a Chevy Truck, Ford has been the number one truck seller in the US for 40 plus years on end in a row. Doesn’t make my Chevy any less enjoyable to drive. To that guy all i would say is if Sales matter take a look at what a game like Mario Kart 9 will sell compared to multiple Xbox or PS exclusives combined. Nintendo will be just fine with whatever number of Hardware and software sales it makes in 2025. Look at Sony they are in like 5th place or worse in TV sales but they keep making them and they ranked high among my favorite set’s of the year. Gets so old that the only thing written about PS these days is the units sold of the machine. Cause i really like the PS5 for just the base value of fun and features it provides not that it sells a lot. It’s hard to say if the Switch 2 could outsell the PS5 when there’s still not much we know about the Switch 2. Sure there have been some leaks of the system and joy-cons, but we don’t know everything about it yet. The article mentioned variables like cost, release date, and how many units Nintendo can manufacture. There are other variables as well like launch games, games that will continue to come out later in 2025, if Nintendo has a new gimmick in this system…. There’s a lot of “if’s” that can’t be answered because we don’t know anything about it yet. It’s all a guessing game which system will sell more.If Nintendo prices it right, gets it out early in the year, has a great launch lineup, shows off a few upcoming must haves, is able to manufacture enough…. It “could” be the top selling system. Again, it’s all “if’s.” I’ll wait till there’s at least a full reveal before making my own predictions.Lol some of the reactions to this prediction when there was another even more ridiculous one before that saying there’s only room for 1 other console, besides Nintendo, next gen@HonestHick console sales do matter if console Sales didn’t matter Sega would still be making consoles and Microsoft wouldn’t be porting they’re games to the ps5 because Xbox series s/x poor sales.@djlard 4 people “❤️” that load you just posted.Everyone automatically expects Nintendo sales to dominate. Even after coming off the epic failure that was WiiU. I don’t do these prediction games. I remember fondly the predictions on VGChartz about how WiiU would destroy PS4. One of those consoles still remain in production. And it’s not the one everybody predicted.@Oram77 I don’t get how Nintendo doesn’t seem to take any flak for these things when the other console makers get demolished over it. Lower expectations, I guess.Wow, Switch 2 hasn’t even been announced and has no release date so far, and you’re telling me PS5 is going to outsell it this year? What a prediction, what a story.Who cares really, if Nintendo or Sony sells the most consoles this year? “My console sells better than your console”runs away and cries 😂I should become an analyst.Just predict things all day long, and keeping the job, even if I’m guessing wrong 95% of the time. Pachter style 😂@HonestHick Because sales are in fact a partial determiner of the fun you’ll have with a product. If the PS5 was a lame duck in terms of sales, third parties wouldn’t release as much content on it as they do, (and it would probably be less polished due to their projected sales), and the officially supported lifespan of the device itself would be shortened.Funnily enough, the Switch’s predecessor – the Wii U – is a textbook example of this.Things we don’t know about Switch 2:Launch date
Price
How many will be available
How many Nintendo will allocate to each regionGames
Game release dates
If above games will be next Gen exclusive or dual releases like most PS5 and Xbox gamesBut yeah, let’s make some predictions.🙄@ChrisDeku I wouldn’t call Mario Kart a casual game far from it@devil76 A game can be casual and still good, a massive amount of people who are on the more casual end of the scale buy MK as one of their first switch games. It is one of the best games to play within a family.I don’t think people owning a Switch will replace it with the new edition. It’s going to take years to settle down in the market on conquer a new generation of gamers. Kids today have smartphones to play and they are more powerful than a console, that was not the case 10 years ago. This all comes down to how many units Nintendo can get to market. Not surprising along with the launch of gta 6 this year, PS5 is going to sale a lot. It pretty normal for a new console not to be the top seller for the year due to supply constraints. I say switch two will be the top seller in 2026.@Bionic-Spencer Yeah I had some money saved aside for a Pro, but I figured I’d be better off waiting a bit and spending it on the Switch 2. I don’t need a slightly better PS5 than my launch day unit as much as I need a brand new Nintendo system.@AlexOlney Helloooo there, lovely person.@Dimey lol actually looks like they’re going to do their own streaming service, so now like Xbox everything is a sega.@devil76 How is Mario Kart not casual? It has mass broad appeal including to people who don’t play a lot of games. This deserve a ‘duh of course’ response.@Jay767 Sega sold 9 million consoles and couldn’t bring their games to PC. But i get your point and yes sales matter to a extent. Steam deck don’t have 30 million in sales and it get’s a lot of worthy press news. I am ok seeing and hearing sales on a quarterly bases but it’s every week thats all i see. Now granted cause Sony doesn’t have an exciting roadmap of games ready to talk about outside of Wolverine and GOT. I understand the content for clicks is a little low. But come on. There is more Xbox and Nintendo news on here than a purely PS site should have.@djlard GTA VI alone may give PS5 a big big edge against Switch 2@MrPeanutbutterz with what you just described that type of console would have to have around 10 million or less in sales and in no way are any of the big 3 in those positions. Nintendo not getting 3rd party often times has nothing to do with sales of the console but cause of power and people buying the game on a more powerful platform or the game skipping the platform all together. Again is the news for PS5 merely down to well it’s the mainstream sold box? Surely not i am just saying it’s getting a little boring seeing all these talking heads point that out and then ask when is MS bringing its games to PS5. When is Sony bringing some games to PS5 is what i want to read and what are those games. Please please please be Resistance or Motorstorm. Hey a PS3 fan can still dream right? It’ll have like half a year head start so I’d be surprised if it didn’t.I don’t care which console outsells the other, I just hope this year is a better one for games than 2024. There some gems last year but overall it was pretty meh across all platforms. I would’ve called it a bad year had Astro Bot and Indiana Jones not come through at the last minute to salvage things.I love my PS5 and Series X, but Nintendo is in a separate class. The Analyst is wrong. Lol. When Nintendo comes out with a new console, everyone buys it. It’s like the GTA of consoles. I find it strange that almost everyone bows to the Playstation, but meanwhile, Sony has the least amount of money between Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. I mean, it’s not even close.@HonestHick That’s partially why I mentioned the Wii U – 13 million sales total, and was taken out back by Nintendo and put down. PS Vita sold about 15 million, was decently powerful for a handheld and all of this happened to it too.I agree with your other points though.@Oram77 @DennisReynolds That cause those same people still goes out and buys the game…My friend group talked major crap about Sword and Shield, but they still went out and bought SW&SH then bought Scarlet and Violet. How do I become an analyst? Seems like easy money. Do I just start spouting whatever comes to my head and the money starts coming in?@Romans12 Out of Nintendo’s four home systems this century, the GameCube was a relative flop, Wii did well, Wii U was a disaster, Switch did amazing. And “why do you worship the smaller multibillon dollar mega corp” sure is a take… (despite the fact that Nintendo’s market cap is just above half of Sony’s).@Romans12 “ Lol. When Nintendo comes out with a new console, everyone buys it.”Virtual boy

Wii Uyeah, sure. Nintendo bailed out of the console market and fabricated a glorified handheld as their new replacement entirely as a place in the industry. You find it strange how people “bow” to playstation, but the trend of giving nintendo a major pass and unparalleled bias like some golden child is even more strange. people “bow” to sony because it’s the best console that fits their modern needs and modern games , both consumers and developers alike. people “bow” to nintendo because they can’t move on from their childhood.by the way, i have a switch and all nintendo consoles except a wii uI’m expecting a lot of “OG Switch works fine for me, why should I upgrade?” posts. Improved graphics and computing power are a hard sell for a user base that largely doesn’t care about either. Of course, Nintendo probably has an ace or two up its sleeve. With how utterly disappointing PS5 has been this gen compared to PS4 & 3, save for a handful of great exclusives like Astrobot, SH2R and some Directors cuts, Switch 2 cannot come soon enough. 🙏@ChrisDeku don’t forget Gameboy > Gameboy colour!I think in a straight 12 month race at a similar price point and availability Switch 2 would dust PS5 in Sales. But GTA 6 alongside those other variables mean it is hard to predict what 2026 full year sales will look like. Due to the JRPG overlap and the lack of appealing 1P Sony games in the future I might just Switch over to Switch 2, but we shall see.Switch 2 isn’t even out? How can they the sales?@Toot1st its his predictioni held off from buying a switch in hopes a successor comes out so hopefully this is the year or at least we get a release date@Darylb88 sony does still have a lot of 1p story games that haven’t been announced yet though Show CommentsLeave A CommentHold on there, you need to login to post a comment…Do You Put Your PS5 in Rest Mode or Shut It Down?To rest or not to rest, that is the questionUnfortunately, PS5’s Disc Drive Add-On Shortage Doesn’t Seem to Be Getting BetterJanuary bluesAlmost 3,000 Massive PS5, PS4 Deals Added to PS StoreWhatever floats your boatRumour: PlayStation Is Working on Reviving Some of Its ‘Deep Cut’ Franchises”At least a couple” in developmentThis Awesome LEGO PS2 Set Will Be Officially Considered for ProductionGetting emotional 42Feature 18 PS5 Predictions for 2025 49Rumour Gears of War, Hellblade 2 Both Set for PS5 This Year 11News British PS5, PS4 Survival Game Atomfall Could Be a Great Alternative for STALKER Fans 11News The First Berserker: Khazan Gets PS5 Demo Next Week 50Talking Point PS5 Saves Video Clips When You Earn Trophies – Do You Leave That Feature On?Poll Are You Happy with Your PS Plus Essential Games for January 2025?News Square Enix Wonders Why Life is Strange: Double Exposure Didn’t Work OutNews PS Plus Essential’s January 2025 PS5, PS4 Games Available to DownloadNews Do You Put Your PS5 in Rest Mode or Shut It Down?Quiz How Well Do You Know Uncharted?Feature 34 Under the Radar PS5 Games to Watch Out for in 2025News Unfortunately, PS5’s Disc Drive Add-On Shortage Doesn’t Seem to Be Getti…Rumour Halo: The Master Chief Collection Coming to PS5 This YearNews Your First Look at Virtua Fighter PS5 Will Drop JawsNews Leaked GTA 6 Image, Reportedly from Rockstar’s Own Office, SurfacesPopular Right NowShow More Join 434,324 people following Push Square:© 2025 Hookshot Media, partner of IGN Entertainment | Hosted by 44 Bytes | AdChoices | Do Not Sell My Personal Information
