2025 Critics Choice Awards winners list: ‘Anora,’ ‘Wicked’ score surprise victories – Gold Derby

L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

GoldDerbyThe Critics Choice Awards spread the wealth on Friday night, with seven films winning above-the-line awards, including a shocking Best Picture win for Anora. The Sean Baker film was blanked by the Critics Choice Awards until the night’s final award, failing to convert bids in Best Original Screenplay (which Baker was favored to win), Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov, Best Director for Baker, Best Ensemble, and Best Editing (for Baker).Anora wasn’t the only unexpected winner during the ceremony. Just before the Neon release and six-time Oscar nominee took home Best Picture, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu won Best Director honors. The victory was a shock. Chu, who was snubbed in the Oscars Best Director category, bested Oscar nominees Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Baker, Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) for the honor. However, the result might have something to do with the calendar: Critics Choice Awards voting ended on Jan. 10, long before the Oscar nominations were announced and back when Chu seemed like a dark horse contender and could have benefited from a Critics Choice Awards victory. The ceremony was initially set for Jan. 12 but was shifted twice because of the California wildfires.

Things were more stable on the acting front as all four Oscar frontrunners won in their respective categories at the Critics Choice Awards.Demi Moore took home Best Actress for The Substance, her second televised ceremony victory following the Golden Globes.Adrien Brody won Best Actor for The Brutalist, holding off A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet.Emilia Pérez star Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for the Netflix film amid controversy over its star, Karla Sofía Gascón. “My wish for the impact of this film on audiences in our world is that I hope we can all be curious and open-hearted towards each other because you never know when you’ll have the opportunity to be a hero in someone else’s story,” she said during an emotional acceptance speech. “So our world is too big and too beautiful to be any other way.”Best Supporting Actor went to A Real Pain star Kieran Culkin (the Oscar frontrunner was not in attendance due to his upcoming Broadway commitments to Glengarry Glen Ross).

Screenplay wins went to Fargeat for Best Original Screenplay and Conclave writer Peter Straughan for Best Adapted Screenplay.A non-industry group, the Critics Choice Association is celebrating its 30th year. This year’s nominees were led on the film side by Conclave and Wicked, which each landed 11 nominations, including bids for Best Picture and Best Ensemble, where Conclave emerged victoriously. Dune: Part Two and Emilia Pérez were close behind, with 10 nominations.Wicked, The Substance, and Emilia Pérez led all films with three victories. Shogun led all series with six nominations among television nominees, including five acting bids—three of which the show converted into wins (Best Actor in a Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for Moeka Hoshi, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for Tadanobu Asano), in addition to its Best Drama Series victory. Several programs received four total nominations, including Hacks, which won three awards: Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Jean Smart, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Einbinder. The 2025 Critics Choice Awards were initially scheduled for Jan. 12, but the ceremony was pushed to Jan. 26 due to the devastating California wildfires. A second delay pushed the ceremony to Feb. 7. Host Chelsea Handler opened the ceremony with a tribute to first responders who helped with the wildfires.  “I would like to address the devastation that unfolded here in Los Angeles in recent weeks,” she said as the room full of A-listers from film and television gave a standing ovation to the first responders in attendance. “What we saw and the scope of loss has been almost impossible to imagine.” Much like Sunday’s Grammy Awards, the Critics Choice Awards also flashed a QR code onscreen to encourage home viewers on E! to donate to charitable causes to help those displaced by the fires.

Founded 28 years ago, the CCA is “now the largest critics organization in the U.S. and Canada, with over 580 members,” according to its website. The Critics Choice Awards often consider itself a reliable precursor of Oscar nominations, and the group has frequently rewarded eventual Oscar winners. (Oscar Best Picture winner Oppenheimer won Best Picture from the group last year, while future Oscar winners Robert Downey Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Emma Stone won Critics Choice acting honors.) But this year, it remains to be seen how close the Critics Choice Awards match up with the eventual Oscar honorees.Below is the complete list of Critics Choice Awards winners.WINNER: Anora

All I am hearing here is that the Academy is very much aware how Brody winning for yet another holocaust survival role will look especially when they are fighting to hold on to younger people. It will look like they vote storyline instead of performance which is the thing young people say about the Oscar’s anyway. The Academy are 10,000 individuals filmmakers. They aren’t concerned about “fighting to hold on to younger people.” The producers of the award ceremony do not vote. They can only try to appeal to an audience through spectacle between awards, not in who wins altogether.the substance is a ridiculous movie. too much soft porn and nudityExcited to see the winners of the Critics Choice Awards!
